Mark 8:36, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

The Bible is filled with many important questions. Eternally important questions. For example, the first question found in the Bible is God asking Adam, “Where are you?” God asked Cain a very direct question, “Where is your brother Abel?” The Bible is the book that asks, “If a man die, shall he live again?” And it was Jesus who asked, “What shall it profit a man, if he should gain the whole world, and lose his soul?”

In a very brief statement, Jesus sets before us two supreme things, and He sets them in contrast; the one against the other. The world versus the soul. He says if it were possible to gain the world, and in the process lose your soul, you have made a bad transaction.

Even our wildest imaginations cannot measure the resources of this world. It only takes a tiny part to make a person unbelievably rich. Suppose you have all the known wealth of the county where you live, or the wealth of your state. Suppose you owned all the gold in the world. Just imagine how wealthy you would be if you owned any of those three.

But Jesus takes it to its fullest potential and states it as strongly as it can be stated: “What if you owned the world and everything in it?” If we own it all, but lose our soul, our loss will be greater than our gain. The good news is that Jesus came to save. Do you know Him? There’s no better time than right now to ask Jesus to forgive you and accept Him as your Savior.
