When you think about night, it can produce contradictory feelings. For many people, it means rest. A peaceful time for the body to recharge from the hecticness of a busy day. Growing up in a small town, we never gave any thought to something bad happening to us at night; it was a time for things to slow down, chasing lightning bugs, and enjoying the beauty of a star-filled sky.
That feeling doesn’t seem very prominent today. For some, night brings a sense of dread. A lot of evil occurs under the cover of darkness. With so much violence, many people are afraid to wander out at night because of what might happen. Night can also be a time when hurtful or sad events in our lives, which we may be able to control during the day, seem overwhelming in the darkness.
There is a song that captures some of these feelings.
“No more night, no more pain.
No more tears, never crying again.
Praises to the great I AM.
We will live in the light of the risen Lamb.”
As we turn to the final page of the Bible, we read these words in Revelation 22:5, “There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.”
There is coming a day when there will be no more suffering, no more pain, no more fear: a day beyond our wildest imagination. There really is a fruit tree that will keep the doctor away, with leaves that bring healing and fresh fruit each month.
The curse has been reversed, and God has made all things new. I agree with John, “Even so come quickly, Lord Jesus.”
