Revelation 5:4-5, “I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”
Beginning with Chapter 4, we are caught up to the throne room of heaven, where all those gathered around are worshipping the One who sits upon the throne. Among the many sights described in the Book of Revelation, we are told on several occasions of a multitude that cannot be numbered. That makes verse four even more significant. When they began looking for someone to open this scroll, not Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Samuel, David, Solomon, Daniel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, John the Baptist, Peter, James, John, or Paul was worthy to open that book. John, an Apostle himself, let his tears flow like a river when he learned that no one in all creation was worthy to break the scroll’s seals and open God’s book.
But then, John was told to wipe away his tears because Jesus had stepped up, took the book in His hands, and broke open the seal. He alone was worthy because He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of all creation. When Jesus steps into our lives, we realize how unworthy we are, and we may weep for a moment, but Jesus then turns our weeping into joy. We can rejoice and praise the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Lamb who was slain from before the foundation of the world, for all He has done for us. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
