Did you enjoy that extra hour of sleep? When I was in my teens, I thought sleep was a waste of time. After a few months with little to no sleep, my legs buckled one day while I was working with my uncle, and I realized that perhaps I did need a little more sleep. I still don’t get the recommended amount, but a tad more than I used to.
Late one night, I began to wonder if we would need to sleep when we get to heaven. Life as we know it now needs sleep, and God made us that way. God even put Adam to sleep on one occasion, and boy was Adam surprised when he woke up! Since this was before sin entered the Garden of Eden, sleep has nothing to do with sin.
Some things won’t be in heaven. Revelation 21:4-5 says, “God will wipe away every tear from our eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away. Then He who sat on the throne said, Behold, I make all things new.” So, there will be no crying, sorrow, pain, or death in heaven. Jesus said in Matthew 22:30 that no one will be married in heaven.
There are some things we will have in heaven. We will have some kind of resurrected body, and we will recognize the people who are there, even those we never met on earth. We will eat in heaven because there are all kinds of trees that bear different kinds of fruit, not to mention the marriage supper of the Lamb. But none of these answers my question about sleep.
While the Bible is silent on this subject, we do know that we will live forever in the presence of the Lord, and all such questions as this will be a thing of the past. Until then, the hope of eternal life we have in Jesus should fill us with joy and confidence as we trust and serve God by day and lie down to sleep at night. Happy dreams!
