Psalms 33:9, “God spoke, and it was done.” Some versions read, “God spoke, and it came to be.”

My dad was gifted in many ways. Among them, he was a skilled carpenter. Some of his handiwork can still be seen in the churches at Braswell and Union Point that he remodeled when he was the pastor, and at our campground in White County. Other family members were gifted in various ways as well. But all of them were only able to take something that already existed and use it to make something else. We often say that someone “created” something, but only God can create something from nothing.

While some in the scientific community disagree, I stand on the Word of God, which says that God spoke and it was done. When I go outside at night and see the stars, I think to myself, God did that. When I stand on the edge of an ocean or gaze at majestic mountains, I see God’s creative handiwork. When I look at you, I see life that came from God. There are also things I cannot see that are essential to life as we know it, such as the air we breathe and gravity that keeps us anchored to Earth. God is also the creator of love and all that is good.

I hear a lot of fear from those who think everything around them is about to explode. I take comfort in knowing that the God who created all things is still holding it together. So, why should I worry?
