~ Our Part In Communion ~

Matthew 26:17, “On the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

The Jewish people sacrificed a lamb each year during the Feast of Passover to remind them that God brought them out of slavery in Egypt. Although it was God who provided the deliverance, there was a part the people played. They had to prepare a lamb and apply the blood. In other words, they had to prepare the table. When the “Lord” saw the blood, He passed over that home, which saved them from death. If you read Exodus chapter 12 carefully, you will see that Jesus was part of the first passover/communion in Egypt.

Regardless of how perfect a lamb that was prepared for sacrifice, it was never quite good enough, so the sacrifice had to be repeated each year. Jesus would become that once and for all sacrifice that made it possible for the sins of the world to be atoned for.

As the hour for Jesus’ sacrifice drew near, preparations had to be made, and it was the disciples who made them. They asked Jesus, “Where do You want us to prepare the Passover meal?” They were the ones who gathered and prepared the food, and set it on the table, just as we do today.

Jesus provides Himself as the sacrifice, but we must come to the table.
