~ Food That Doesn’t Spoil ~

John 6:27: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life…”

When I was growing up, we always had plenty of food, and Mama and Daddy both knew how to cook extremely well. The table was always full of delicious food, and it didn’t last long enough to spoil. We ate it all.

I have been blessed to visit the place where they believe Jesus fed the 5,000. What caught my attention recently wasn’t the multiplication of food; it was Jesus’ statement the day after he fed the multitude concerning food that spoils and food that is eternal. Jesus told them they needed more than just physical food; that kind of food will spoil. Increasingly, we get warnings of food that has become contaminated and could potentially kill us. I have a good friend who almost died recently from eating lettuce.

Jesus was talking about spiritual food. Actually, He was talking about a personal relationship with God that provides “the bread of life,” which gives eternal life. When we find Jesus, not only will we never hunger again, but we will never thirst again. He is the bread and water of life.

I remember a song from 1971 by the Lanny Wolfe Trio.

Only Jesus can satisfy your soul,
And only He can change your heart,
And make you whole
He’ll give you peace you never knew,
Sweet love and joy and Heaven too,
For only Jesus can satisfy your soul.

Many things are necessary to sustain life, but none should keep us from pursuing the most important: a relationship with Jesus. Do you know Jesus as your personal Savior?
