1 Corinthians 10:31: “Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
You’ve probably heard someone say, “Whatever you do…” Most of the time, those words are used as a warning or a plea. When we were kids, if we did something we knew we weren’t supposed to, we probably told a friend, “Whatever you do, don’t tell my Mama and Daddy.”
As we grow older and get a job, someone may ask us, “What do you do for a living?” I’m a carpenter, I’m a painter, I’m a dentist, I’m a nurse, I’m a preacher, I’m a teacher, and the list goes on and on. In our culture today, a person’s worth is often measured by what we do.
I’m thankful God doesn’t use the same measuring stick the world does. But God does say in Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
I see so many people who seem to hate what they do. They aren’t friendly; they seem to do the least they can and still draw a paycheck. Even if we find ourselves in a job we don’t especially like, God says, whatever you do, do it the best you can and be thankful.
When we come to the end of our life, it will not matter how high we climbed the social ladder, but what we’ve done for God will matter. Were we faithful to whatever God called us to do? Did we give Him our best?
