Every day is filled with choices – things that I decide to do or not do. My actions produce consequences. Newton’s third law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Strictly speaking, that’s not always true. The choices we make determine whether the consequences will be positive or negative.

The choice Adam and Eve made had the most negative consequence in the history of the world. They had a choice and made a poor one. They didn’t have to do what they did. One day, David looked over his balcony and saw a beautiful woman taking a bath. Lust consumed his heart, and David sinned. But David didn’t have to; he had a choice. The consequences had far-reaching implications for his family.

An angel appeared to a young maiden named Mary and told her of an incredible event that was about to happen to her. We don’t often think about it, but Mary had a choice. She willingly accepted God’s plan for her life, and the consequences of her decision led to the birth of Jesus.

Judas is remembered as the greatest traitor of all time because of a choice he made. Saul of Tarsus had a divine encounter on the road to Damascus and was confronted with a choice. The world is a better place because the man remembered as the Apostle Paul said yes to God’s call in his life.

While not even remotely close to the examples I’ve just mentioned, I remember vividly standing at 1:00 a.m. as a teenage boy, gazing at an altar. I was faced with a choice. Do I continue to say no to God, or do I accept the One I’ve been running from? At this point in my life, I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if I had said no. Where would I be, what would I have become? My life today is the result of that one choice I made many years ago when I knelt at an altar and accepted Jesus as my Savior.
