Jesus has been crucified and buried. In the early morning hours on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene goes to the grave. She is shocked to find the stone rolled away and an empty tomb. She runs to tell Peter and John. They came, saw the empty tomb, and then left. But Mary stayed, and wept. Her weeping was interrupted by two angels, which didn’t seem to faze her very much. But then she hears another voice that asks, “Who are you looking for?” She assumed it was a gardener until He called her by name.
Sometimes our situations cause us to miss the obvious. Mary had experienced a miraculous deliverance in her own life. She had witnessed countless miracles and listened to Jesus teach for the better part of three years, yet in her grief, she could not see Him, even though He was standing right in front of her.
I’m quite confident that you and I are guilty of the same. And yet, in the stillness of the moment, if we will sit still and listen, like Mary, we will hear Jesus calling our name. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. He promised to be there throughout the entire journey, and experience teaches me that He is, if I will only look and listen. In the midst of whatever you may be facing today, who are you looking for?
