Luke 24:49, “And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
I have often tried to put myself in the place of the Disciples after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. For a little over three years, they had witnessed the unbelievable almost daily, and in the natural, they were. Now, as Jesus is preparing to return to the Father, He tells the Disciples that they are to carry the Gospel to the whole world. I’m sure they were wondering how that would be possible.
Although Jesus had addressed this before, in these final moments, He had to dispel their doubts and fears. They not only had to be convinced of everything they had witnessed, they had to believe that God would be with them to fulfill the mission. Jesus reiterated in Acts chapter 1 what He said in Luke chapter 24. He said, “Don’t leave town until you are clothed with power from on high.”
This power would help them become effective witnesses. This power would enable them to live a victorious and overcoming life. This power would change the world. This power was possible through the indwelling presence of the Holy Ghost. He is the power that we need to be clothed with if we are to effectively change the world.
Recognizing the importance of this, the first question the Disciples seemed to always ask when they encountered new converts was, “Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?” How about you? Have you been clothed with the power of the Holy Ghost? There’s no better time than right now.
