When God called Abraham, he and his descendants became a unique people. They were not like the people around them and were never intended to be. Sadly, the day came when they wanted to be like the sinful nations around them, and they demanded that the Prophet Samuel appoint them a king.
In 1 Samuel 8:5-7, we read, “Make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord. And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.”
By wanting to be like everyone else, they rejected God and chose a man. Saul had a promising beginning, but an out-of-control ego soon led him to disobey God’s commandments. His pride and rebellious spirit would cost him his kingdom and his soul.
You and I are faced with this same temptation today. Do we want to have a special relationship with God, or do we want to be like the world around us? There are consequences to our choices.
