Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

We’re still reasonably close to the beginning of a new year, that unique time when people declare they are going to make some changes in their lives, often having to do with food and exercise. Most people think change has to begin by starting new routines, meeting new people, setting new goals, and so on. That seldom works unless we change the way we think.

Paul’s words to the Romans tell me that spiritual transformation also doesn’t begin with behavior; it begins with belief. The renewing of the mind is God’s way of helping us see things from His perspective. It’s not just about doing something different; it’s about thinking differently. It’s about allowing His Word and His will to speak louder than our doubts, our past, and our culture.

It’s like I have stressed in my sermons for years. Real change doesn’t happen from the outside in, but rather from the inside out. A change of mind and heart is required.
