Matthew 27:50-52, “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, He gave up His spirit. At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split, and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life.”

When Jesus gave up His spirit, when He died, it set off a chain reaction. The curtain in the temple that blocked access to the holy of holies except for a select few was torn from the top down. It was as if God grabbed hold of it and ripped it open. The earth shook so violently that rocks split wide open. And to top it all off, those who had died in the faith rose from the dead and started walking around town. How would you have felt if you had been there that day?

In one sense, the veil in the temple separated God from the common people. Their access was limited to the outer courts of the tabernacle. But when Jesus died, He died for all. I no longer need a priest to intercede for me; I can go straight to God myself.

And then, there are those dead people who are no longer dead. Even though they had been resurrected, they would still have been considered “unclean” by Jewish standards. It’s almost like a foreshadowing of what Jesus would later say to Peter, “Don’t you call unclean what I have cleaned.”

A lot is being said on the day Jesus died. My relationship with God was changed. The debt of my sins was paid in full. He took my guilt upon Himself. I am no longer viewed as unclean, but righteous in God’s eyes when I accept Jesus as my Savior. A lot of good things happened on the day Jesus died.
