1 Samuel 14:6, “Perhaps the Lord will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.”
Do you ever find yourself reading and suddenly, one word catches your attention? In this case, it was the word “perhaps.” I began thinking about the “perhaps” moments in the Bible, and there are many of them. Jonathan was facing a moment of uncertainty. He wasn’t sure if God would intervene in this battle, but he was sure they would win if God did.
Reminds me of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They didn’t know if God would deliver them from Nebuchadnezzar’s plan to kill them, but they knew God could. In both of these instances, they acted on their “perhaps” faith. In reality, it was a strong faith. They were willing to commit themselves fully, withholding nothing.
Are we guilty of not taking a step of faith unless we know for sure the outcome? Jonathan started with no guarantee of victory, but he knew God could, and that was enough.
